Temple of the Inscriptiones, Palenque, Chiapas Mexico

Three limestone panels with hieroglyphic inscriptions give this temple its name. The buildings pilasters are decorated with modeled stucco reliefs. Walking through its interior one finds an imposing funeral crypt decorated with bas reliefs where the sarcophagus of the Lord Sun Shield (Pacal) is located. He ruled Palenque from 615 to 683 A.D. The bas reliefs on the stone slab show the name, origin, and ancestors of this ruler. There is also a large central scene that recreates his death and furthermore shows the celestial heavens, various gods, symbols and signs that together represent a synthesis of the Mayan cosmic vision. The crypt's walls have depictions of the nine lords of the night.
